RRH: ENVIRONMENTAL PRODUCT STANDARDS LRH: Jota Ishikawa and Toshihiro Okubo Abstract Consumption is one channel through which the environment is damaged. To protect the environment, various product standards have been introduced across the world. This paper uses a new economic geography framework to explore the effects of environmental product standards on environment in a North-South trade model. We examine the situation in which North unilaterally introduces an environmental product standard. Specifically, those products that do not meet the standard are not allowed to be sold in North’s market. We find that such a standard may worsen North’s environment but improve South’s environment due to firm relocation. * Ishikawa: Hitotsubashi University and RIETI, Faculty of Economics, 2-1 Kunitachi, Tokyo 186-8601, Japan. Reciprocity in Free Trade Agreements
We use detailed trade, tariff, and income data for countries involved in 91 trade agreements negotiated since 1980 to test for reciprocity in free trade agreements. The results offer strong evidence of reciprocity in North-North and South-South free trade agreements, but there is little empirical support for reciprocity in North-South trade agreements. In particular, after controlling for other...
متن کاملNorth-South Trade and the Non-Neutrality of International Money
This paper develops a Ricardian model with money to study North-South trade that is mediated by the currency of the North. The model shows that an increase in the supply of Northern money results in inflation being “exported” to the South. The increase in the supply of Northern money also has real effects: (1) it transfers real resources from the South to the North, lowers the wage rate in the ...
متن کاملOffshoring and North-South Trade with Non-homothetic Preferences∗
This paper examines the effect of offshoring in a model of North-South trade when households have non-homothetic preferences of the Matsuyama (2000) type. We presents a platform from which to examine issues of trade and development in the presence of offshoring. The assumption of homotheticity is prevalent throughout the offshoring literature. We find that in equilibrium the South will consume ...
متن کاملWinners and Losers in a North-South Model of Growth, Innovation and Product Cycles
The paper examines the gains from North-South trade and their distribution. In a `new growth, new trade' framework, we examine the factors that determine four phases or stages of development in the South as equilibria: specialisation in a traditional good; the South in addition copies Northern innovative manufactured goods; the South begins to innovate in its own right and nally a stage in whic...
متن کاملRegional Integration and Wage Inequality
There is little disagreement among most economists that countries benefit from trade liberalization. Yet, whether unilateral, multilateral (through the World Trade Organization) or through regional integration agreements (RIAs), trade liberalization has been one of the most controversial economic issues of our time. It is the focus of everyone from politicians to union leaders and anti-globaliz...
متن کاملSmall State Regional Cooperation, South-South and South-North Migration, and International Trade
Small State Regional Cooperation, South-South and South-North Migration, and International Trade This paper provides a different basis than previous analyses for regional bloc formation and regional migration. Due to low bargaining power and fixed costs, small states face a severe disadvantage in negotiations with the rest of the world and might benefit by forming a regional bloc. The study a) ...
